Sony’s State of Play

Kotaku has a look at all the games featured in today’s Sony State of Play.

I split my video gaming between the PS5 and the Steam Deck. I prefer to play new games on the PS5, and old favorites that feel great handheld on the Deck. Sony’s State of Play events, or at least recaps of them, are always interesting to me. Here are some of the showcased games coming out soon on PS5.

With an ethereal presentation that promises a sword-swinging hero’s journey through some pretty spectacular-looking environments, Lost Soul Aside looks promising for fans of speedy and flashy third-person melee action. Hopefully it will be stylish enough for the more discerning fans of the genre among us. Lost Soul Aside launches on March 30, 2025.

Looks interesting. IGN reports that “Lost Soul Aside clearly channels inspirations from Devil May Cry and PlatinumGames-style action games, as well as Final Fantasy XV, which the developer has been upfront about.” I liked FFXV, I’m not sure how many other people did.

Today’s SoP showed off even more of the upcoming Split Fiction, the science fiction meets fantasy fusion co-op adventure from the makers of It Takes Two.

That’s not much information about what looks like a pretty cool concept. The PlayStation Store has you covered:

In Split Fiction, you and your co-op partner will become Mio and Zoe, two writers trapped in a simulation of their own imaginations after a high-tech attempt to steal their creative ideas goes badly wrong. This pair of strangers will need to learn to work together in order to escape with their memories and stories intact. Prepare to deal with dragons and trolls in Zoe’s fantasy worlds and cyber ninjas and robo-parking attendants in Mio’s sci-fi creations.

I’m not that into games that force you to play co-op, but this certainly seems like a fun follow-up to It Takes Two.

Directive 8020 is a flashy-looking science fiction horror romp that gives me some serious Alien vibes. Dead bodies on space stations, the creepiness of “substances” in space? Heck yeah. Directive 8020 arrives on October 2nd.

So is it more Prey or more Dead Space? I asked the developer’s website.

Hunted by an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey, the crew of the Cassiopeia must outwit their pursuers to make it home alive. To help them survive, the choices you make are more important than ever! Evade real-time threats where any step could be your last. Decide who to trust in a world where anyone could be a deadly alien impostor.

So, Prey. There are much worse games to be like. I’m excited.

Days Gone might be mid at best for some folks, but I quite enjoyed it and with a permadeath mode and other features, I might be willing to give it a spin again. This remaster launches on April 25.

Mid is a good way to describe it, but I got it for free on PS4 and it was fun and interesting. I’m not sure I’d be willing to plunk down $60 for a PS5 upgrade, but maybe you would.

Abiotic Factor, already a huge hit on Steam, is a co-op survival game that gives me some Half-Life vibes, with strange creatures and scientific endeavors that hopefully won’t doom us all.

I’ve looked at Abiotic Factor on Steam, where

Abiotic Factor is a survival crafting experience for 1-6 players set in the depths of an underground research facility. Caught between paranormal containment failure, a military crusade, and chaos from a dozen realms, the world’s greatest minds must survive against the universe’s biggest threats.

It always looked like fun. And it’s only $24.99. Maybe I’ll give it a look when it’s out on console.
